I'm trying to get my car fixed up. I can't be talked out of this either. I've been after this car since I was little, and I finally got it to fix up. Bought it from an owner who before me, had it, but it sat for about 20 plus years, until a few years before I came along, which was the last time it was running. They got busy, and I guess couldn't find time to finish it. Every person I've asked that does Classics says the same thing, that the engine is frozen. Now, I've already took all the spark plugs out, and did the oil soak thing. I was told that after I'd done that, I'd have to get the cover off under the car to reach the crank with a flywheel tool, to do it that way before popping a battery in to start it, so it wouldn't mess up the engine. My only problem is I'm unsure of what the cover looks like, and what I need to get it off. Even a pic of it's location on the bottom of the car would help better, but if no pic, I'm still open. I already have the flywheel tool, and new ac Delco filter, and new air filter, motor oil, Trans fluid, marvel mystery oil, starter fluid, seafoam motor treatment, brand new battery tucked away. I just need to know where to go from there. Any help is appreciated. I want to try to spend as little as I can, though I know I'll be spending a nice amount. Worth it to me. Whatever else I can't do, I'll just take it to the right people to do. I just want to do what I can to not have to put a lot more out.

What do you get when you Google images of flywheel covers?

The flywheel is between the trans and motor no tool needed a big flat head screw driver works. Its just a dust cover a piece of sheet metal covering it. Otherwise put a ratchet on the crankshaft pulley nut and turn it by hand that way.

is it auto or standard?

if its auto its a flex plate use a pair of vise grips on it.

it its standard its a flywheel use a large flat screw driver on the teeth.

or skip all that and use a ratchet on the crank blot or a pipe wrench on the crank pulley.

Thank you. It's auto Trans. I'm new to fixing these, cause nobody never wanted to show me except one person, and he passed away by the time I got it. But I'll get it right.

Okay, thanks. I'll get to it later today, and tell how it turned out.

I got a bunch of stuff that mostly has nothing to do with what I typed in. But I did find the cover, which is funny cause when I first looked, I figured that that's what it probably looked like, but I was still unsure. I also got a pic of a tool called a flywheel, which is what this guy I met who fixed his up his(he made it a lowrider from the ground up by himself), and said to get one for it. It has a screwdriver handle with a long metal stick, and a metal piece that opens out on the other end. Type in 1967 Coupe DeVille flywheel cover, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Or, flywheel tool. It should come up. But he used that.

Yep, that is the best way. A large breaker bar on the crank bolt and try to turn the engine very slowly. Rocking it back and forth will help break it loose. Remove all the spark plugs and spray WD-40 or a Rust Buster into the cylinders. Let it soak in overnight before trying. Odds are, even if you can manually turn it over, with it being that old, it needs to go to a machine shop to have the bores polished or bored out and to check all the crankshaft and cam bearings, The oil and coolant passages are probably all sludged up as well. You are looking at a basic engine overhaulm if you want reliability. This would include new bearings, piston rings and maybe pistons, if they increase the piston bore size and probably a new camshaft and lifters. Carburetor will need an overhaul as well.

Thanks everybody. Great news is, I got it to turn! Making good progress. I've even got the battery in, and for it to have been sitting for 25 years, everything works like it hasn't been sitting. The door lights, the light inside the vent, the antenna button to raise/lower it (it's also the same button used to change the station lol i think that's the coolest thing) the wipers work too. The only thing that didn't come on, was the radio. That's from the rain getting into the rusted hole in the hood on the back, and the other light, but didn't make time to test that light, so i'm unsure on that other one. but i'm sure if rewired, it would work. Also, the heat and a/c doesn't run. However, everything else works. just gotta link the spark plugs back in, and do some other things, and i can see if it'll start. the guy i got it from, when he tried to run it, he just got clicking, but it's not doing that with me, so i did something right. Not saying he didn't, but i mean, i've made decent progress. I feel good about this project too. So far, so good.

As far as the sludge, i think it's been cleaned out, but i'll check before going back to it, to make sure. I'm not going to do too much to it, cause i don't know everything. So, i'm going to play most of this safe, and only do what i know i can do. I remember talking about it, but i don't remember if he told me if it was cleaned out or not. Thanks for the heads up too.
