Need help with deciding on a wedding present

One of my best friends who i grew up with is getting married, and he's the first of my friends to do so, so i dont really know what to get him for his wedding gift.

he's 23 years old and moving into his new house this month.

My other problem is how to go about writing the toast for his reception, i have no idea what to say, someone who's done this before wnat to help me out??

An appliance he and his bride don't have/need?

A gift certificate to Bed Bath and Beyond/Home Depot/etc.? If he's moving to a new house this might be a nice gesture.

 
that's the th ing, he hasn't started a gift registry, he hasn't even mailed out the invitations and the wedding is in mid september, so i'm kinda at aloss right now.

for his engagement i got him a home depot giftcard, not sure if he'd wnat another one from me, but he is planning on redoing his basement, so who knows
 
the toasts are easy.. just speak what you feel. As for the gift.. Ask them personally about a gift registry. and not having sent out invitations yet for a mid september wedding is normal. they normally go out 4 weeks before the wedding.
 
My brother and I came up with the following wedding-gift theory after watching my cousin get married, divorced, then engaged to a different person all within 10 months:

Make it a pair of whatever you chose: crystal champagne glasses, brass candle sticks, whatever. The point is, once the inevitable happens, they each can keep one of the items if they so choose.

We both thought it was brilliant for some reason. But that also could have been the Newcastle talking...

i was thinking his and hers gifts, because he was soo excited to get a PS1 about a year ago, so i was thinking get him a xbox or gamecube, and then something similar for her, or get them a new TV, cuz they only have a 13" right now
