Having dealt with this before most of what has been said is definitely good advice. I only used my land line phone which I don't even have the ringer on for and never gave any other number.

I broke the only in writing rule and did call to work things out but gave no truly relevant information until I got both validation that the debt was mine and a written agreement with the terms we had discussed on the phone. I also recorded the conversation (this is tricky, in some states you have to get permission to record, I did get permission without any issue). The collection agencies I dealt with were actually ok, they didn't try to pull anything and followed the settlement agreement to the letter. Be warned if you settle with one you are essentially throwing chum in the ocean and other debt collections might surface that hadn't before.

Lastly there is a time limit to how long a debt can be collected on based on the last activity (ie the last time you paid usually) it is important to know this. If you don't mind being essentially a dead beat and they are collecting past this date you can tell them to piss off. If a collection agency is pushing to get a "good faith" payment from you they are basically trying to extend out that date. Either work out a way to pay off entirely or don't bother.

Hey folks! Thanks for all the answers.

I'll try out the google service because writing a letter sounds like it would force them to take more aggressive legal options.

We had been buying groceries with a CC cos my father has been unemployed for about 6 months. I'm just sad to see my mother (who is the owner of the cards) have to put up with this stuff.
They also got ahold of my fathers cell # (he keeps it because he can use it to make work deals) which means the phones are constantly going off at home

I have Viatalk for VoIP. I just blocked the number that the collectors call from. A hospital sent us to collection by mistake one time and the people wouldn't stop calling. I just blocked them and never heard back.

I was getting weekly calls from NCO I think it was asking for my brother in law. I did not confirm that i even knew the person they asked for. In fact I told them that we did not know anyone by that name. eventually they called just after 8 on a sat morning. When they called back again 3 hrs later I told them in no uncertain terms to knock it off. Blocked their number in my landline account. 2 weeks later called me again from a new number. went ballistic this time. blocked the new number. No idea how they made a connection between my brother in law and my phone number. Didn't know I could sue them for that.

They will not take aggressive legal options if you simply tell them to contact you only in writing. I have done this multiple times when the junk debt buyers shuffle a 10 year old uncollectable account between them and they manage to find my number. I Limited C&D/DV them and they go away.

Trust me that writing a certified Limited Cease&Decist Debt Validation letter is better than simply ignoring them.

HA! My friend Chris used to work for a collections agency. He hated it. They gave him a cell phone and emailed him a list every day, and he did it from home. One night, he was having a party, and this girl we know, Nikki, was super wasted. She finds the phone and sees all the calls he made in the previous calls list. She starts calling them and yelling "PAY YOUR BILLS MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!". It was at like 2am.

Needless to say, Chris lost his job.

It may have been a coincidence, but, right after we moved a few years ago, and we had kept our phone number of 10 years, for some reason, we started getting collections call for this particular person. Eventually we convinced the callers that our number was a dead-end. It got quite annoying for a while.

Debt collecting must be a terrible job unless you have no soul (which may be true of some of them).

This is an oldie, but a goodie:

We have one that keeps calling us because the name is the same as my wife's brother. My wife's brother has such a common last name that they must be calling all 60 of them in the phone book.

Do you toy with the debt collectors at all?
