Need help with crazy w2k problem

I'm, obviously, having a problem with W2K. Stuff loads through dos fine, loads up windows, then at the user login screen it restarts. This keeps happening until it decides to completely boot. Somtimes it loads on the first run, sometimes on the 5th. Also, I tried to reinstall some new ATi drivers, but when I uninstalled the old ones and rebooted to put the new ones back on, it will restart even from windows now before I can finish installation. Really annoying, I have no clue what's wrong....

Xp 1700
ECS K7VTA3
Radeon 7500
256 Crucial DDR
300 watt Antec

This is all happening after a fresh install/format, and I'ev alrady tried to fix the problem by reformatting so please don't make that your only suggestion!

are you overclocking anything in your bios? set your bios setting to default.

btw: W2K doesnt use dos. I think you might be mistaking dos with the preliminary boot up screen.

Yes the boot up is what I meant, I didn't mean like "C:\" dos, but the non-windows boot up it goes through.

No I'm not overclocking anything, I just finished this system and haven't even tweaked anything, it's all default except my FSB which is 133 now.

Have you tried going into safemode? If you can go into safemode without the restarts then try uninstalling the old video drivers and installing the latest ATI drivers.

I know its a pain but in these cases its sometimes best to strip things down and build up.

Start with video, Ram. If no restarts add sound, then nic..etc.

Good luck and post back if you resolve it.

Load up in Safe Mode and check your event logs. Sounds like it's core dumping from a bugcheck and rebooting.

OK the restarting has seemingly gona away but now I have another problem. I have this invisible line going down the right side of my screen. it's about as big as the scrollbar. Everything that is within the line is stretched to either side, and is really weird. My time looks like "10:34 AN--I". N--I being a stretched M. I don't have this problem when I uninstall the drivers, but I've tried both the drivers on the disk AND the new ones on the ATi website, but both cause the same problems. Anyone have this problem before and know a fix??

this is how I "fixed" the restart:
1. uninstalled drivers again, also uninstalled hydravision
2. windows rebooted 5 times, loaded up, then windows crapped itself, so I turned the power off and back on
3. windows reloaded all the drivers/settings
4. now it hasn't restarted since... (about 3 test times)
