Random shutdowns.
- Full description of the problem and symptoms
The computer shuts down at random. One night I left it on defragging, when I came back the next morning it was off, and when I restarted it, the "windows did not shut down correctly" screen came up. The computer ran find during the day, but left it on overnight again and woke up the next morning with the same problem. Now, the computer is seemingly shutting down at random. Did it twice while surfing the internet (once while typing this post). Ran UT3 at one point without a shut-down. Loaded R6 Vegas and both times it shut-down. My temps are cool according to Core-Temp, and the bios with the room ambient being about 26c, the case ambient being about 30c, and the processor idles @ 30-31c, loaded at about 36c. The video cards also seem to stay cool enough for their stock cooling.
- Did it work normally at one time, or has the problem always existed?
The computer seemed to work normally when I first put it in the new case. Before that it worked flawlessly. The only thing that changed was I went from a 600watt power supply to a 750watt modular one, and a new cooling system, and from a mid-tower case to a full-tower case.
- Is the problem consistent and repeatable, or entirely random, or semi-random?
I was able to repeat the problem loading up R6 Vegas.
- I already tried these steps:
I disconnected an external hard-drive, I cleaned up cables in the case to allow good airflow, I put Lian-Li aluminum casters on the bottom of the case to raise it up off of the ground to allow the PSU to breath better. All of this had no helping effect on the issue
- My software:
- Operating System and service-pack level, e.g. Windows XP Professional Edition with SP2 (Start > Run > winver to find your Windows version)
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with SP1 and all latest updates
- Antivirus
AVG Free adition with all updates
- Firewall
Linksys Wireless router
- My hardware
- Rocketfish full tower (Lian-Li), CPU and Northbridge cooled by a MCR-320 Radiator, EK waterblocks and a MCP-355 pump with a XSPC top/res combo. Video cards stock cooling, southbridge has a thermalright hr-05 SLI. 2x160gb Wester Digital SATA 2 HDD's in Raid 0. Lite-On SATA dvd-r combo drive w/ lightscribe.
- System brand & model, if it?s a pre-built system such as a Dell, HP, Gateway, etc. If it?s not, fill in as much of the information below as you can.
Built by me
- Motherboard brand & model - EVGA 680i SLI w/ latest Bios
- CPU model (and is it overclocked?) - E8400, and no overclock
- Video card(s) brand & model- EVGA 8800gts (g92) 512mb x2 in SLI
- RAM modules brand & model (the voltage being supplied to the RAM may also be helpful to know, particularly for high-performance RAM) Patriot extreme performance ddr2-800 @ 4.4.4.12, voltage @ 2.20
- Power supply brand & model - Silverstone "Strider" 750watt modular (about 3 weeks old)
- Feel free to add more hardware details that you think might be relevant to the issue
- Other information that might be relevant
Possibly a problem with the PSU? Or is it something else?
