Need Help with Cable Run

OK, I've got a cable running from my computer room (top floor) up to the attic and down two floors to my basement. I had the cable working fine yesterday but decided to have the cable go to a keystone jack in the wall instead of having a hole in the wall with the cable just coming out and going into the router. So I wire it up and it doesn't work. I put the cable tester on it and I get the following

1&2 = Green Light With 7&8 = Red Light (reversed)
3&6 = Green Light
4&5 = Green Light
7&8 = Green Light

I don't understand how I can have 4 green lights and one red light. Is it a short in the cable or something (I hope not as the attic has since been filled with blown-in insulation and it was complicated enought to run the wire in the first place.

I would venture a guess that your jack is not wired correctly or the patch cable running from your jack to your pc is a problem. Test both runs of cable seperatley and then take another look at your jack.

The patch cable from the jack to the pc is brand new and purchased (not home-made). It tests out fine. I've checked and rechecked the jack. If I take either 7 or 8 out of the jack (the brown and brown with white) then 1&2, 3&6, 4&5 are all green as well.

OK, I've removed some possible problems. If I unwire all cable from the jack and only plug in 7&8, I get a green light when it would normally flash for 7&8 and then a red light (for what would probably be when it was flashing with the green 1&2 that is now disconnected)

That's no fun, I've been there. I really hate to tell you this but with all that testing and you're getting wierd results it may be the cable itself. Have you tried cutting back a few inches and crimping a new end on the available sides?

yeah, I've cut back about 8-10 inches on one side and probably 6 inches on the other. I don't have a ton extra to spare on either side, so I'm trying to keep it to a minimum in case there is any hope for this cable. I really don't want to try to run another. I think if I try connecting a new one to the old one it wouldn't pull through the house very easily.
