Does the windows XP backup utility back up EVERYTHING, like operating system, registry entries, etc?
If I were to back up a HDD and then format it, could I return it to its previous exact working state with the backup?
Would all the programs work and would all the licenses be intact?

Helping a friend fix his computer. He took out his old hard drive from his old sony and put it as the slave in a new system. He then put it back into the old computer (as the master) and now that computer doesn't boot anymore. The BIOS sees everything, but it doesn't boot, not with startup disks or CD's or anything.
