Need help with AA/AF in Oblivion

I can run 4xAA/8xAF on my X1800XT fine at 1280x960. When you first run Oblivion it should set your default settings to "Ultra High". Leave them at default, turning all the sliders up to the max doesn't really provide a noticible IQ boost but really degrades performance. And make sure Adaptive AA is off, its too slow to use in Oblivion.
