Hi all,

I am new to this overclocking thing.

When I purchased the used MB/ cpu, it came with everything set in the bios already overclocked to 3000+. Did not want to push it since it had the stock hs/f combo.

Well, I got a new sk-7 heatsink and redid the thermal compound on the cpu with AS Ceramique. Reinserted the cpu and it tells me a new cpu is installed and to go into bios to setup. Originally had the settings of 200fsb x 11.5 at a voltage of 1.725. I tried to reinput those settings and reboot but it stops there. Is there something I am missing??? Running at default now.

Also the 80mm fan that I have on the sk-7 is very loose with the wires that attached to it. Anyone worry that it will fall off??? How are you guys keeping it on or securing it more tightly??

Were you originally running @ "200fsb x 11.5 at a voltage of 1.725" ?

I would reset the bios to default for staters and also make sure that your SK7 is seating correctly on the cpu, also how much thermal compound did you use ?

I have a SK6 which came with two sets of wire brackets for mounting the fans, possilby using wrong wire brackets on it ?

Hey Gazza,

Yes, Originally running 200fsb x 11.5 @ voltage of 1.725 but took out the cpu to clean and apply thermal compound.

The sk-7 is seated correctly on the cpu. I used a thin layer of ceramique to cover the core of the cpu.

I used the bigger wire brackets on the 80 X 80 x 25 fan. The other smaller ones seem too small. I hope that is correct???

Do a visual check to ensure that your heatsink is not riding up on the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket. It should look like this: photo and if it doesn't, then unclip the end with the screwdriver receptacle and do this. Because the SK-7 can slide back and forth on its clip, you must do this, although I'm guessing you're ok... otherwise you'd probably get thermal-emergency shutdowns.

It's normal for many Asus boards to go straight to the BIOS and revert to default clockspeeds if they weren't allowed to complete their POST the last time around. A safety valve, if you will. :) It may also have reverted your RAM timings and voltages to default, so go through and reset your RAM timings and voltages to what's necessary for 3000+ operation.

BTW, the SK-7 comes with two pairs of 80mm clips, one for the thick 80 x 38mm fans, and the other for 80 x 25mm. You might have used the 38's on a 25mm fan, perhaps.

Mechbgon,

I made sure the hs was done right and not up on the plastic. :)

I just could not remember what the ram timings were. I never had to figure out what they were?? Any suggestions???? I am running 2 x 256 Buffalo Tech's PC3200 DDR ram.

Also regarding the clips. I used the wrong ones. DOH!!! Put the right ones on yesterday and it held nice.:D

Thx

What are your temps ?
Also do you have the fan blowing towards the HS or away ? (blowing towards is usually better)
What settings do you now have in your bios and did you reset the bios to default and try again to overclock ?

Gazza, Thanks for all the help.

I get on the comp occasionally. Hard to do with a wife that hates when you get on and a 1 yr old who needs attention. ;)

I did not run any tests. When I start up and surf net and stuff, around 36c when checking bios. The fan is blowing ON the new sk-7.

The settings are all on default now. I will try to put all the known setting(200fsb, 11.5 @ 1.725) when I get a chance. Do I do that all in one shot??? Do not know anything about ram issues.

Lemme check your manual so I can get a clearer picture of what settings to use :D

ok. I went ahead and upped the fsb to 200. The multiplier to 11 @1.65. Tried it on default vcore voltage. It booted to windows with no probs and all was dandy until while surfing the net after like 30 minutes, the comp would just restart. The cpu temp in the bios read around 38c.

Does that mean I need to up the vcore voltage to keep it stable???

.... or is it a heat related issue????. I am using an sk-7 with a 80mm fan on top. I also got 3 fans blowing in there. 2 in the front and one in the back not including the Antec Tru430 psu fans.

LMK your thoughts.

Bump the voltage up to 1.7 and try again, if same again try 1.75 till you get some stability.

One way to test your system for stability is to run prime95.
