My wife got a virus on her laptop yesterday and I can't seem to get rid of it.

I restarted the laptop and after the system post it says

"chainloader /bootmgr

error 13 Invalid or unsupported executable format

Press any key to continue"

When I continue I get a screen with red back ground with a bunch of options called GRUB4DOS 0.4.4 and the optoisn are to start windows without a loader or with a SLIC loader and a bunch of different options

If I select the grub command line option and use the command quit it says

"GRUB was not booted from DOS or the backup copy of DOS at physical address 0x200000 is corrupt"

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Booting to the Windows install disc, and running fixmbr should straighten it out.

Thanks, but how do I run it? I let the install disc load and then selected repair but fixmbr wasn't an option.

I can't remember the exact wording, but you want the command prompt. You'd then type it in there.

What O/S are you using? I'll try loading it in a VM and see if I can get the exact steps for you.

Boot to the DVD, hit next when it prompts for language and everything, then on the next selection screen pick... Crap, I forgot already :^D Other repair tools(is what I think it's called), then pick command prompt on the next screen.

Ok I got the command prompt but typing fixmbr doesn't do anything.

I got it working, I just used the Startup Repair option and it fixed it. Thanks for your help!
