Need help with a troubling ebay situation

So I was trying to sell my Xbox 360, I had problems finding a buyer locally so I had to turn to eBay. I have 175+ 100% positive feedback from both selling and buying and I generally avoid any high value transactions (>$150) because the potential for fraud and problems is much higher. I didn't really have a choice, so needless to say, my fears came true.

My first auction basically fell through. There was a ton of details and a lot of confusion at first, but I figured out what happened after it was all over. Basically, a third party scammer sent my buyer an e-mail telling him that there was a problem with my Paypal and that he had to send a money order to an address to Romania. The e-mails were obviously not from me since they did not have my real name or e-mail or any other information that doesn't appear on the auction page for anyone to see. Because of the scammer, the buyer backed out and I canceled the auction. I offered the 2nd highest bidder a second chance offer but he had already bought an Xbox from someone else.

I am very vigilant in screening e-mails for scams and never log into stuff by clicking links in e-mails. However, as a precaution I changed all of my passwords anyways. What worried me is that the scammer somehow got the buyer's username and e-mail, the that info is only displayed to the buyer and seller. However, the scammer only had my username and no other personal information.

I assumed that this scam problem is probably a fluke so I relisted the auction and put a warning in for my buyers. Despite this, my new buyer gets a similar scam e-mail and will not pay. He forwarded me a copy of the e-mail he received, I sent him a reply informing him of the third party scammer and am waiting for a response.

I am pretty sure my account is not compromised since the scammer is not using any personal information of mine. I have changed my passwords and I use different passwords for my Paypal, e-mail and ebay accounts. There is no suspicious activity on my accounts either. However, the scammer is somehow getting the e-mails and user names of my buyers which worries me. Any advice on what to do?

Can I have your thread? Thanks.

While I may be banned for this, hopefully someone up top will fix the damn problem.

Maybe you should turn 360 degrees and walk away before it's too late... 😛

I figure if I do it enough it will attract enough attention to fix. Any and every post I make timewarps. No exceptions.

If you've changed your passwords and are still having problems, it is possible that your computer itself is compromised, since password changes are useless if they are getting all the keystrokes from your system.

If they have all of my passwords, targeting just my ebay buyers is a strange way of doing things. I do most of my banking online and they could easily drain my accounts of money, especially my Paypal. I haven't seen any suspicious charges or anything. Also, if they can access my accounts, why not use my real name and e-mail address in the scam e-mail? They made up some generic name and e-mail. They could also just hijack my account and do whatever they want, but there has been no suspicious activity other than the third party e-mails. They could've sent the scam e-mails from my hijacked account without me even knowing.

Interesting, I was searching around and a guy posted on his blog about the exact same scam. The e-mail message, address, and name of the scammer is identical to the guy who tried to scam my first buyer. If you look in the comments, the same scammer has tried it on others too.

Another one here

I'm so confused as to how this scammer is getting people's e-mails and usernames. I noticed that my buyers had their e-mails as "ebay username"@yahoo.com and @hotmail.com. If the scammer can somehow obtain the username, then the e-mail is easily guessed. However, the usernames of auctions are now hidden so IDK how he is doing this.

Another reason I don't use that piece of shit auction site anymore. Used to sell high dollar items on there, iPod and X360, A/V equipment. But no more. I sold my Wii to a friend for cheap instead of putting that on ebay and risk getting scammed. Just not worth the trouble and headache.
