Okay, so my gf's parents bought her a car off of there son, so she would have something to drive. Well its a junker, but it does run. One problem is that her brother wired the fan on the raditor with the windshield wipers. So now when the fan comes on the windsheild wipers stop working till the fan shuts off. I found the spot where he connected them and disconnected it, the wipers work fine, but now, obviously the fan has no power. What or how can I wire up the fan?

hook it directly up to the battery.

just make sure you put a fuse in there in the event of a short.

Yeah thats what i thought, but where can I put a fuse in at? All I have is a wire coming off the fan, and it's barely long enough to reach to the battery? Where would the fuse go?

I would not wire it directly to the battery, or else it would run all the time, LOL

Put it on a circuit that runs only when the car is running, and put a fuse anywhere along that line.

Remember, you can always add more wire as necessary. You could wire it to the battery directly, but with a fuse AND a switch. Or wire it to something that comes on when the car is running.

Yeah I thought about wiring it to the light inside the hood comparment, but that has constant power and I don't think it was designed for that kinda power, cause it got really warm. I don't really have time or the know how to rewire this whole thing. I kinda need a quick fix for at least today.

For a quick fix, wire it to any "on wen running" circuit. Later, when you have time, wire it to a "hot always" line, and get a temp sensor. Then use the temp sensor to turn the fan on and off. Without a temp sensor, the fan would cool too much. Yes, that is possable. Expecialy in the winter.

Well can you suggest any things I could check for to connect it to? As I said when it was connected to the wipers, they only worked when the fan wasn't. That was bad enough, I really don't want to connect it to something even more needed.

i don't think he will have a problem. let me explain why.

in his original post, he said he wired it up to the wiper circuit. he said the fan came on and came off on its own fine. this gives the impression that there is a remote relay that will turn it on and off according to engine temperature.

take a wire and run it off the positive terminal. go to radioshack and buy some wire, you should be ok with 12 guage. run the wire off the positive terminal, once you get close to the positive wire ( make sure the fuse is within 8 inches of the battery ) connect it to the positive wire of the fan. i'm assuming you said it is barely long enough, so you should only have to buy a few inches of wire from radio shack. an ideal situation would be to get the fuse as close to the battery as possible.

EDIT: a 15 amp fuse should be more than sufficient.

I don't have time for radio shack right now. I have less then an hour and a half to get this fixed. What else can I just wire it to as a quick fix?

Maybe I will do the radio shack thing this weekend, if I do, what type of fuse are you talking about, I mean how can you just wire it into the wire.

if it won't reach to the battery, see if it will reach to the starter, i think that might work, or maybe the fuse box if it is in the hood of the vehicle. for the fuse, you only have to get an inline fuse holder.

if none of those work, follow the positive wire off of the battery and see where it goes, if there is a terminal of wires somewhere by the engine, connect it to that.

Get an "inline fuse". You dont need to go to your fuse box if thats what you're wondering.

EDIT- Didn't mean to step on your toes Cattlegod :)

Okay, I played with it some more, and I noticed soemthing. I originally thought the wipers would stop while the fan was running, like maybe the fan was drawing too much power from the wipers, but now I know that the wipers only run while the fan is running. I don't think it has a temp thing in it either, since when I connect the fan to either the light in the hood or the battery itself, then it runs continuously.

Inline fuse, is that like the fuse I used when i wired my amp up to the battery?

hook it up to the fuse box if there is one there then, that way it only runs when the car is on.

I don't even know where the fuse box is. Like you said the postive wire from the battery runs off to another little are where it is connected with a bolt. I know if I connect the fan to that, that it will run, but it will run continuously if the car is on. Can I just loosen that nut and put the wire under it and screw it down? Or will that break something, or even worse kill me somehow.
