Need help with a setup

I live in a duplex with 3 apartments. Basement, middle and top. I have a modem on the top floor and I'd like the basement to have internet access too. I'd really prefer to wire the whole place but it's going to be too much so I guess I'll try wireless. I've never used wireless before, I don't know where to start. I game a lot so I'd like to have the best latency possible. Basement is surrounded by concrete. Should I put the router right next to the modem? Should I try to bring it to the middle floor instead?

I'm going to game a lot. Any router and USB recommendations?

Thanks.

You want to share internet with your neighbors? This is likely forbidden in the TOS agreement. You should have the modem and router in your apartment, use an ethernet cable to connect your computer to the router for the best connection. Setup your wireless router with minimal security (firewall your computer) and let your neighbors connect if you want, but they'll get the connection they get. Your internet connection is what 10mbps? Even wireless G is 54mbps, your neighbors will be more limited by the internet service provider than the wireless connection.

No it's not neighbors. The duplex belongs to me. It's only family living in it. With my ISP I have the internet, TV and phone. I called them today to have them move the modem to the bottom floor while keeping the phone and TV services on the top floor but they said no. So I was looking at wireless solutions. They are giving me a lot of trouble.

You're using cable??? Your service comes from a copper line that is likely split for the phone, TV and internet from one singular cable drop from the utility pole. You may have wiring downstairs but it's likely a secondary line, you'd have to subscribe to a second line at the address for the other side of the duplex to split it up, which means you won't get the package deal and prices will probably double because you'll be subscribing to two lines not one.

If you own the duplex why can't you run cable? Cat5 cable, keystone jacks and cover plates are about as expensive as wireless adapters.

Do you have a wireless router or wireless access point with your ISP supplied modem? I'd suggest borrowing a laptop from a friend and see how bad the coverage is throughout the house. It may be good enough with the router on the top floor.
