Need help with a Panaflo fan

Well here's the good news. I got my XP-90 installed and working great. I'm looking at my temps using Everest and they have come down 10c from the stock AMD HSF.

Now the bad news. I can't get the Panaflo fan to run when its plugged into the 3 pin hook up on the motherboard. I have it hooked up to my Vantec fan controller at the moment. I'm assuming I have to bump up the voltage but when I went into the BIOS to do so it was already up to 12v and wouldn't go any higher. Also the Panaflo fan only has 2 wires coming from it, a red and black. Well any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a Abit AN8 ULTRA motherboard as well.

The panaflo only has 2 wires coming out of it. I have my U1A Panaflo hooked into my CPU Fan connector on my mobo and am running it with Q-fan @ 60C. Did you try a different connector on your mobo?

Is the Vantec fan controller you refer to one of those little box type devices with which you can vary the fans speed ?

If it is, I would not use it. Try hooking the fan directly to the motherboard connector.

You can get a 2 to 3 pin adapter wire or you can take a knife and file away the edge on one side that prevents your from plugging it ito the motheboard.

I haven't tried any other connecters on the MB, if I don't have something running off the CPU fan hook up my system beeps at me.

Ok guys, i've just tried every 3 pin hookup on my motherboard and none of them will run my 92mm Panaflo fan. My Vantec fan controller will though and thats what I have it hooked up to at the moment just so I have some air blowing on the xp-90 but I don't want to keep it hooked up to that for any longer than I need to. I'm not sure what else to try, I have all the 3 pin hooks set at 12v in the BIOS but for some reason it won't run it. The black wire is on the right, the red is in the middle. Any suggestion please let me know. Thanks.

Looking at the 3-pin connector with the openings pointed up and the contact slots facing you (the guide ears on the away side), the black should be on the left and the red in the middle.

FYI: You should be using a fan with a working speed sensor on the CPU fan connector unless you disable CPU protection functions in the BIOS.

Uhh some Panaflos have a 2 => 3 pin connector already, so they have a 3 pin connector. Do you have a 3 pin connector? Most Panaflos don't have RPM monitoring, so its only 2 wires e ven if its on a 3 pin connector.

Don't plug it into your Mobo. Certain Mobos can't supply more than 5W of power. If you have a higher speed Panaflo, don't use it on your mobo. My computer REFUSES to boot (DFI LP NF4 Ultra-D) with my medium 120mm panaflo in the CPU fan plug. I have to plug it into like Fan 5 or 4 to get it to boot. But I use a fan controller now, so I don't care....

Most Panaflos are very low power - no problem with mobo connection.

Uhh medium panaflos draw like close to 4W of power. Go high speed and you'll be drawing around 5. Ultra high you're drawing even more....

Zepper: The wires are connected to the 3 pin hookup the right way as you said.

DLeRium: In the BIOS it allows me to adjust the volts the CPU fan is allowed. 12v max, 11.5v min is what I have that 3 pin hook set at.

I'm not sure what else to try. The only way it will work is when its connected to the fan controller which leads me to think that the 3 Pin CPU hook up isn't giving the fan enough power.

Do you have the right polarity?

Panaflo fans are great, but they won't start at less than about 6.5 VDC. The motherboard uses PWM, pulsing 12 VDC to control fan speed. At startup, the controller might be modulating too low. The draw of a Panaflo 92mm Medium is 1.8A at 12 VDC. Check your motherboard manual to see what it's controller can handle. Some boards can easily handle this.

Edit: You could plug it in and give it a flick with your finger, just to see if you get anything at all.

I checked my motherboard book but couldn't find anything thats had to do with the PWM. Is there any other way I can find this info out?

I think the answer might be in the settings for Fan EQ1.

Control Temp High - 65c/149f
Control Temp Low - 35c/95f
DC Fan Voltage High - 12v
DC Fan Voltage Low - 8v

Nope, no luck flicking it. I was just in the BIOS for a good 15 mins messing around with things. I uped the voltage on every 3 pin hook up on the board and couldn't get anything to work. I reset the BIOS and had no luck either. I have no idea what to do. I had to hook up the 2 pins on the Panaflo fan by myself. I'm pretty sure I got them hooked up ok but maybe thats the problem. Also, if they were hooked up right then they wouldn't be working when its hooked up to my Vantec fan controller would it? I'm making a trip back to FrozenCPU monday to exchange a floppy round cable that was too short, maybe i'll exchange the fan as well and get one that has the 3 pin hook up already on it.

That's a weird one. I use a 92mm Panaflo with a Vantec controller at about 7VDC. If I plug it into my mobo, I can only get full speed.

Yeah i'm stumped. I'll take it back to FrozenCPU on monday and get one with a 3 pin hookup already installed on it and i'll mention my problem to them and see if they have any suggestion. If you can think of anything PM me or just reply here. Thanks again for the help.
