The cost of seeding a lawn is directly proportional to the area to be seeded. The cost of seeding an area 40 feet by 6 feet is $24.00. At the same rate, how much does it cost to seed an area that measures 70 feet by 40 feet?

I understand that direct variation is y^1/x^1=y^2/x^2...but i cannot figure out how to set it up as the 40x6 and 70x40 are confusing me...any help?

I have no idea what direct variation is or the formula behind it... but just looking at your example, this works...

(40 x 6) / $24.00 = (70 x 40) / $x

and then just cross-multiply to solve for $x
