Its for my VP's kid. 500mhz processor lots of ram good HD needs a great vid card but he's a cheap bastard...around 100 bucks. What should he get?

His kid is into the driving games.

What vid card does he have now?

I think that a recent graphics card like a GeForce3 would be useless on a 500mhz machine. Your VP's son would be better with a GeForce2 GTS or MX.

Link to Newegg's Line of GF2 MX cards (all under $100)

My friend has a GeForce2 MX and it runs games really well. He has a 533mhz Celery and lots of RAM too. Just remember, his system is sort of slow so it will struggle on graphic intensive games. It would be wise to spend another $100 and upgrade him to a Duron or something - it would suit the GF2 MX really well. Even games like Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed occasionally struggles on my system with all the graphic options turned on.

That processor is really gonna hold the system back. Any graphics card over $100 would be a waste anyways.
I would look into Geforce 2 MX400, the Geforce 4 MX 440 can be had for under $100. Or the ATI Radeon 7500

Use pricewatch to find the best deals.

Actually, you can go to Newegg right now and get a VisionTek Xtasy 32MB GeForce2 GTS-V for $49 ($56 shipped). That'll definitely beat a GeF2 MX card.

Good luck Tex. :)

My personal choice would be the ATI 7500 64MB DDR, it's at Newegg for 96.00 w/Shipping.
Or you could get the older Radeon 32MB DDR video card for around 50.00.
