Well, did you totally remove all of the Nvidia drivers for the video card when you installed the Radeon 9800 (like with Driver Cleaner 2.0)? If not try uninstalling the ATI drivers, then run driver cleaner and get it to remove both ATI video drivers and Nvidia video drivers, etc.

Try that, because ATI's drivers can be VERY picky if you don't totally uninstall the old card. Did you reformat before installing the 9800? I know it's not the best solution (and I don't really format before a video card most times anymore; too lazy) but it might get you working if you didn't reformat before you got the 9800.

yes i did a clean install...could it be the amd heatsink (slim volcano 5 mod?). i also removed the shim very carfuly. i have no graphical glitches just lock ups.. the only thing i have changed on my pc was the amd sink mod and i put a hard drive cooler in, the one that screws under the hard drive with two fans in it. evercool i think..

Yeah, if everything worked fine before the mod, it's probably your heatsink. Doesn't AMD heatsink has that little hump? Maybe it's not making solid contact.

did you know that cat 3.8 really heats up the system. use cat 3.7 and try it.

The 3.8 catalysts were the worst. I uninstalled everything, did driver cleaner, reinstalled windows, and it still gives me an occasional BSOD. Make sure you're not o/c'ing when you reinstall the catalyst drivers. My problem seems to be a conflict between the NIC and 9700 (llocks occasionally when I'm connected and watching ATI TV; that sort of activity).

the only type of lock up i get is fozen screen and a sec after it locks up , the hdd light stays on.then i have to hard reset every time.
how could this be a faulty vid card if all graphics are crisp clear and play smooth with good performance/????? i get no bsod, just the same freeze up at different times..this is really drivin me nuts...3d mark2001 and 2003 never locked up on it,, now i finally get to playin real games and this bs. i have tried clean win xp install,,, useing default clock speeds in driver.
the amd hs that i used was a thermaltake slim volcano 5. it has copper plate bonded to aluminum hs. and i mounted it perfectly.. i recently took it off and put stock cooling back on thinkin that maybe some arctic silver 3 got on the transistors and was causin it to lock up,, when i got the stock cooling bck on the same thing happend but took a lil longer...
all the games i have tried that froze are serious sam :se max payne 2 ,madden 2004. i have tried moto gp 2 but didnt lock up on that.. didnt play it long enough i dont think...maybe.,. im afraid to try out lots of others just to find out this is a serious prob... my next try im gonna disable fast writes and see... i wish i could just find one person with this problem to help me out... thx 4 any help..
