PLEASE HELP. i have no idea whats going on, it was running great until now
im running an amd xp3200+ (not overclocked) on win XP sp1
-today i disconnected my system to connect another system to my monitor and kb, mouse
-when i connected it back it would not load windows, just rebooting after taking a while on the loading screen (with the little bar running back and forth)
-safe mode works, ad aware, spybot, chkdsk, windows troubleshooting where i got rid of non-esssential items, msconfig where i tired all diff options, pulled out and tested ram, using onboard video instead of my vid card.
-weird that i could not disable my radeon 9700 and there was a secondary one in the deivce manager also but even with the card out and onboard video on it did not work.
-i really have no idea what to do and I would rather not reinstall windows if I did not have to. please let me know any other ideas for me to fix it. thank you so much..

one more thing, i was in a rush and put the monitor cable and lan cable to the onboard ones instead of the agp/pci ones i had when i first reconnected and restarted the system. could that have done something? i dont know how because they were both disabled anyway. thanks again ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!

Well if safe mode works, it should be fixable. It's when you can't get into Safe Mode that it's bad.

Try this:

- I would first try selecting "Use last known good configuration..." in the boot menu. This resets the registry back to the condition it was in the last time it successfully booted into normal Windows.

- If that fails use System Restore to go back to a restore point AT LEAST a 3 days before the problem occured (due to the way System Restore works going back 1 day may not work). If that doesn't work go back farther (a week or a month).

- If it still won't boot then I have to assume it's a spyware or virus issue. A simple scan with Spybot won't do. Refer to my detailed spyware cleaning instructions here: http://theflyingpenguin.com/spyware-removal.shtml
Afterwards run a FULL virus scan from SAFE MODE

It's normal for there to be two 9700's in device manager. It's a dual head card with two seperate outputs so it appears as two cards.

Plugging into the onboard LAN and video card should not have caused any problem.

Hope this helps...

thank you, i tried doing all of that but i could not go into safe mode with networking. it would just reboot after it loads everything up. any other ideas?

It sounds like a virus may have screwed up your networking if it won't boot into Safe Mode w/ Networking. If you have access to another computer with a CD-burner you can usually burn the necessary installers and updates to CD.

i tried system restore to a few days ago. i jsut tried mcafee virus scan. seems really weird but probably something did get corrupted along the way. I guess i will try some more and do a fresh install if it doesn't work. thanks again guys

The very fact that selecting "Safe Mode with Networking" causes a reboot indicates to me that your issue may be the network card. Try disabling the network card and any other network devices in device manager and see if it'll boot.

Before doing a total reformat and install, try a system restore REALLY far back. A month or more maybe. Because of the way System Restore works, going back just a few days before the problem may not work.

It may also just be a corrupt core file or corrupt network srivers. A repair install of Windows XP may fix that.

Good luck.

how do i do a repair install of winxp? do i lose my settings and files with this? nothing worked so far and somehow system restore doesnt have any other dates besides today anymore..weird..thanks again guys

i have no idea how to use recovery console for a repair.
weird, i went to windows setup and it cannot access my harddrive that windows was on.
safe mode still works and boots it up though. any other ideas?

Well, if safe mode works but safe mode with networking doesn't, then remove your NIC (or disable it in the BIOS if it's internal) and then boot up and see what happens.
