There's also these "micro PCs" that have been out for a while. Here's a couple of reviews of one of them, the Espresso:
Ars Technica
HardOCP

And the Espresso's successor, the Cappuccino:
Ars Technica again
TechTV

There are more reviews available, just search for "espresso PC" or "cappuccino PC" on Google.

I've seen the Espresso PCs but consider one of the MSI Concerto series of NLX/LPX systems. I have an older one based on the 440BX and the thing is solid. The design is very efficient and space saving. The mobo even has provisions for OCing although I only went with a mild boost due to the close quarters inside the case.

Newegg

The one at Newegg is based on the i815 chipset and comes with 4MB video, AC97 audio, LAN, Firewill, TV out, and the usual ports. I personally like these better than the BookPC because of MSI's reputation for quality.

Just add CPU, memory, optical drive, floppy, and hard drive.

I am not at all familiar with Solaris. Is there something that prevents it from running on a laptop?

yeah, pretty much solaris doesn't support laptops for intel based platforms.
