Need help w/ transfering files between comps over a router

Judgement

I'm trying to transfer files with my room mate. We're both connected to his Linksys router but neither of us have networking experience.

We're bothing running WinXP, and I set the folder with the files I want to transfer to the "shared" setting so that the hand appeared under it, but he can't find my computer or shared folder under his network places etc.

What do we need to do in order to be able to transfer files back and forth with each other over his router without having any connection to the internet?

Try accessing his computer by typing its full path to it in the address bar in the format...

\\hiscomputername\shareddirectoryname

Also are you in the same workgroup?

workgroup is probably the main thing, after putting them both in the same one the should be visible under your network places > workgroup computers iirc

I'm not sure if you are understanding things quite right. You need to make sure both of your workgroups have the same name such as Workgroup or MSHOME or whatever you choose just as long as they are the same.
