Need help w/ Super Orb

I bought a Super Orb fan for my 1.2G w/ ASUS A7V board. How do I remove the current fan? It's on there VERY snug? Do I pull the metal tab down and out? What's the best way?

Also, I don't have any thermal paste. It is absolutely necessary to use the paste? Or can I get by w/out applying the paste? Don't want to fry anything!
