budget of $300-400

thinking of getting:

ASUS via KT333 mobo
Crucial 512MB PC2100

--------------

1) what chip runs well in terms of performance/price (and maybe a lil OC...but not a lot) w/ this?
2) a great mid-tower case w/ a 350W PS?
3) any other rig setup that i can go w/ if i don't get the asus kt333 mobo thats good for my price range?

thanks in advance.

ABIT KD7 Motherboard $91

Googlegear 601AEB-420DF Mid Tower Entry Level Server Case (Black) w/420 Power Supply Retail $80

make sure you go w/ CAS 2.0 ram, otherwize the size doesn't really matter cause your losing all the benefits to latency

Great advice there Kid. I just looked at all those componants on newegg. I have a few questions for ya though... I see alot of peeps that have their 1700 or 1800 O/C'd to 2.4 - Is this possible? And with the high end cooling you recommend? I am sorta new to AMD and also am looking to build a new rig and would like to do it for a reduced price and get as much performance as I can get for the buck. What video would you recommend? I see alot of others are saying that the nVidia 4200ti 128 is about the best deal price/performance wise now? Also is the Samsung Memory as good as the crucial? On the Mobo, I have used ASUS on all of my Intel boxes and have always thought they were the best out there. Just out of curiosity, what is your rig specs?

Thanks

Possible but not probable. Depends heavily on your overclocking environment (i.e. memory, power supply, etc.)
And with the high end cooling you recommend?
With the cooling mentioned above or even better, a SLK-800, you should get the best results obtainable using air cooling. I don't want to give out Gigahertz estimates because once again, it depends heavily on the overclocking environment. But, I would say that on average you would obtain better overclocks with the XP 2100+ Thoroughbred Processor (OEM) from newEgg.
What video would you recommend? I see alot of others are saying that the nVidia 4200ti 128 is about the best deal price/performance wise now?
For price/peformance, I would agree with that. Ti 4200 is a good buy. Especially since many of them overclock very well. Some folks here are overclocking ATi Radeon 9500 128MB Non-Pros to 9700 speed and beyond. Not garaunteed, but possible.
Also is the Samsung Memory as good as the crucial?
The Samsung original tends to overclock better than the Crucial memory. But, if yer really serious about about overclocking, go with Corsair.
On the Mobo, I have used ASUS on all of my Intel boxes and have always thought they were the best out there.
Abit is awesome. In my opinion, the best AMD motherboard is a Abit board (Abit NF7-S) and the best Intel Pentium4 board is from Abit (Abit IT7 MAX2).
Just out of curiosity, what is your rig specs?
I'm gettin by with a 1700+/ATi 9000 NP system. My next build will be built upon the Abit NF7-S.

I wouldn't get a KT333 based motherboard. They are cheap, but they are not as fast or feature filled as nForce2 motherboards. Buying a better motherboard is definitely worth it.

Crucial 512MB PC2100
That memory is excellent, and you can't buy more quality memory for less.

1)The Athlon XP2100+ is a steal at 80-90$ shipped. However, the 1700+/1800+ Thoroughbred will run nice and cool, and it will overclock better; relative to the 2100+, the 1700+ will be slightly cheaper and the 1800+ will cost about the same.

2)Get an Antec combination for higher levels of quality, but go with Enlight for a cheaper simpler solution (Enlight is not low quality).

stech4u, I should mention that you could also get the Epox 8RDA+ from TCWO for about the same price as the Abit NF7 (not the same as the NF7-S, which has the nVidia APU among other great features). The reason for the switch is, the 8RDA+ has the nvidia APU (better sound) and firewire while the Abit NF7 does not. That is, if ya don't mind buying from two seperate vendors.
