My parents computer I built for them is an albatron PX865PE Pro with stock HSF and P4 2.4C the temps are idling around 50 C and spike up to almost 70 C under heavy load.

I replace the 60mm exhaust fan (case) with a more powerful one, but still no help. I also used artic silver instead of the thermal pad for the HSF.

should I worry? These seem awefully high to me.

hmmmmm......that does seem pretty high. I hope it's just that the motherboard is not reporting properly.
The heatsink should feel pretty toasty at 70 C.
I've got the Gigabyte 8IPE1000 PRO with a 2.4C P4, and i used the stock fan and the stock thermal pad and my system
idles at between 29C-33C.
Under load it can get up to around 33C-37C.

So it does sound like yours is hot, and i didn't even use any artic silver. I do have 2 80mm case fans, 1 in front and 1 in back.
But i don't think that makes that big of difference.

it really sounds like it's just misreporting the temps.
hope that helps :)

Yeah, it's either misreporting, or the processor wants to fry some bacon for its breakfast! Although, what proc. came originally in the box? That can make a difference sometimes.

what are you talking about? he built the pc. that is a high temp. make sure you have the heatsink seated properly. make sure there is an intake fan on the case somewhere as well as an exhaust.

Did you follow the instructions as listed here?
Arctic Silver III Instructions

The HS should be more than toasty. It should be very hot in fact; immediately after turning off the computer (well, a minute or two after) ground yourself to the PSU and check. What is the case temp reading? Are you o/c'ing (I assume no)? Make sure your fan is spinning, and after that I don't know.

hey,

im also concerned about my temps as well.
Currently I have a 2.4 C (not overclocked yet until my new pc3200 ram ships this week), abit is7 mobo, and an antec 1080 AMG (total of 7 fans in the whole system, 2 rear, 1 HDD, 1 northbridge, 1 cpu, 1 side panel, 1 video card).
Im running the winbond hardware doctor (abit mobo software) and reporting:
cpu temp: 45 idle (usually low-mid 50's load), system temp: 37 idle (usually around high 30's low 40's load)
cpu fan speed of 2300 idle (retail HSF), northbridge fan speed 6500

is this too high? I am planning ot overclock and things can only get worse.

Yours is do to your MB and how it reports the temps. Check out the Abit forums here and see for yourself

the system temps are ususally in the mid 30's yes there is an intake fan blowing in from the side, putting the air very close to the cpu.

I might try a better Heatsink and see what happens

mcveigh,
what monitor software are you using? i tried MM5 and it was giving me some crazy readings. when i talked to albatron support, they said that 3rd party software might not work right and that they would be developing their own soon. when i asked what soon meant, i got no reply. to make a long stoty short, i only trust the bios temps for now. i am hitting mid 40's so i guess i cant complain.

Here's some info you might find useful:

My 2.4C @ stock voltage (1.525V) o/c to 2.9GHz with the retail HSF on it and using the intel thermal pad thingy:

45-48C Idle, 60-62 under full load.

My 2.4C @ stock voltage (1.525V) o/c to 2.9GHz with retail HSF, scraped off intel thermal pad thingy and put on artic silver ceramique:

39-41C Idle, 55-58C under full load.

Before burn-in, with the intel thermal pad the highest I hit was 65...it still ran fine and stable overnight...just a bit hot. I was worried at first but from talking to various people, I have found that P4's RUN HOT! Also, keep in mind the ambient temperature of your room. Mine is high at about 27C so that can affect things. You dont need to worry about burning out your P4, because when it hits 70C it will just throttle down to a lower speed to reduce the heat.

If I were you I would scrape off that intel (*&# on the bottom of your HSF (if you are using the Intel retail one) and use some artic silver for sure!

MBM is different but the weird thing is it seems to change sometimes the bios is higher, sometimes lower.

I had 40-41 C w/ a 2.4 at default voltage w/ the stock intel heat sink w/ artic silver.

I got a Zalman cnps7000 AlCu, now I get: 30 - 31 C

I have a P4 2.4c with stock heat sync fan and pad on an Abit IS7 board.

It is overclocked to 3.1ghz at the default voltage stable.

Under load my temps get up to 63-68C!!!

I am sort of worried, but I read that my board misreports the temp, but it's not clear by how much.

Wierd thing is that when it is at these temps I touch the HSF and it is a little warm, but not hot at all...Shouldn't it be really hot to the touch?

I may try some artic silver just for piece of mind.
