Need Help w/ Data X-Fer problem !!!

I am trying to backup some data from a dell notebook that i have... the laptop keeps restarting after every time trying to load. So I was gonna just restore the thing and format it but i want to try and save some of the information on the disk before I do that... So I physically removed the drive and installed it into my Desktop system, I am able to browse the drive but when I wanna go further and Save the DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS folder... Both systems are XP... everytime I try to open the folder it will tell me the drive is in use or it is write protected... I just wanted to know if someone can help me out and guide me as to going about and copying.... THANKS !
