Need help w/cable modem

Had order SCM Barricade 7004, (router, print server) but my cable co. won't let me get the info needed for router to connect. Sent it back. Now one machine is win98SE(connected to cable modem) & the second machine is winME.
Question :
Should or rather can I put a two port 10/100 in the win98
or add a second nic card?
Should I use my old switch or crossover cables?

Just want to connect the 2 machine for internet sharing and gaming w/my brother.

Did some reading, have cable modem connected to switch both machines are connected to internet w/individual ip address but when I try to play multiplayer quake111 she frezzes up? what i'm i doin wrong?
