I hope someone can help. I think I have a virus in my bootup sector. I am just a hack, so I hope I can describe my problem clearly.

I am running windowsXP pro. When I turn on my PC it will start normally. I'll see the info screen and then goes into the "windowsXP is loading" screen. This is where the problem is.

My monitor will start to blink on and off. My desktop will never load up, but I will see glimpses of the welcome screen and the start of my desktop icons trying to load. Everything is running very slow and after a few minutes the screen stops blinking and just goes black.

I have an old HD that I loaded with XP. I can now startup my computer and verified all my hardware is good. I have plugged in my main HD that has "my entire life on it" all the problems. I can see all my folders and family pictures and stuff all seem to be intact. THANK GOD!

So, does anyone know whats happend to me? Can I simply repair my main HD now that I can access it thru another drive set up as the master? I hate the thought that I'll need to buy another large HD and slowly copy everything to it, and then start all my programs over from scratch.

Please help

Steve

Please list your system components. This could be a simple issue of an insuficient PSU. Or you may have a video card that is going bad.

Considering he can boot up from another HDD, that does not seem likely.

I think the OP should get an external HDD, boot into Windows, install a virus-killer (Avast, for instance) BEFORE plugging in the external HDD, and backup his files. Then you can format the faulty HDD and install Windows. Remember to check the faulty HDD for errors, though.

Alternatively, get the newest version of UBCD, boot it, and run the antivirus apps. They might be able to fix the problem.

Be sure to get hold of a backup-solution in any case. The external HDD i mentioned will do nicely - most of them even come bundled with backup software.
