Need help - veggie alert - cooks get in here.

Ok, I'm making a grand tour of all the veggies that I've never ate because I assumed they are gross.

Tonight - the veggie is brussel sprouts. Of course I could look up random recipes online, but I'm looking for you guys to recommend a tasty way to eat these. Please go gentle on the 'needs to be common ingredients' - I don't have any specialty stores around.

I like spicyness if that helps. . .

Roasted.

Take the sprouts, a couple of teaspoons of olive oil, generous amounts of salt and pepper and, if you have it, a shake of nutmeg. Place all that in a plastic bag and shake a la shake n bake. When the sprouts are covered with the oil and spices place them on a baking sheet in a 400* oven for 30-40 minutes. That's it. Take em out when the outsides get a medium brown.

Can't help with brussel sprouts as I've never tried them either.

But that's a cool idea! What vegetables have you done already and how did you like them?

Parsnips - they are tasty - kind of like carrots with more 'oommph'
Beets - I tried them like 3 different ways - I hate them.
Turnips - I like them broiled with feta cheese on top. I also made a soup and used the turnips like potatoes - worked well.
Kale - didn't do much for me - but if I have some I pulse it in my mini processor and add it to tuna, boiled eggs, and sweet relish for a sandwich - the kale evidently adds alot of nutrition

I love brussel sprouts.

Get some bacon, cut it up into little pieces and cook that. Then steam the sprouts. Toss them all together with a little olive oil and eat. You could also put the sprouts in the bacon pan when they are done steaming if ou want some extra bacon flavour.

With bacon is the only way to fly.

I suggest cutting them in half, or quartering, and searing them in some rendered bacon fat (remove the cooked pieces). Then reduce the heat, cover, and let them caramelize a little and cook through. Add back the crispy bacon and serve.

Definitely roast them as instructed above, it helps to sweeten them. You can quickly stir fry them with a little bacon fat for extra oomph.

Ok, I did them - I didn't have olive oil - so I just used a little melted butter, sea salt, pepper, and some chili pepper flakes. . .shook it up - 400 degrees for 40 minutes was wayyyy too hot for my oven. The leaves were starting to get too brown after 20 minutes - so I reduced the heat to 250 and kept them in another 20 minutes. Needless to say, I was sad that I only prepared 10 of them. They were quite good!

Ok - which veggie should I try next. . .

Califlower
Asparagus
Turnip Greens

other suggestions?

I cant believe I missed this thread. The ultimate brussel sprout recipe:

cube up some bacon, 1/3 lb roughly. Pan fry it. Remove the bacon, Drain some oil.
Cut the stems off the sprouts and slice down the middle.
Toss those in the bacon grease, salt and pepper them.
1/2 through, add 3 T of butter to carmalize them, also add the bacon back.
once they are golden brown, take them out, and grate fresh parmesan cheese over them.

Serve. These are the best brussel sprouts you can make.
