Need help upgrading!

guys,
I'm not sure if i'm in the right place, but here's my prob. I've got PII 300 on my system and i wanna upgrade to P3. Only, i'm short of money so i'm thinking of upgrading my mobo first, then buy the processor when i recover. Will somebody suggest a good (if not the best) mobo but not pricey that will support my 300 right now and later on can still be used for P3, say, 100 bux?!😱 I'm not familiar with mobos. TIA

You're better off getting an AMD system. 🙂
You're only bet is to get an Abit SH6(Intel Slot 1 i815E) for $140. You can use your current P2 300 there and later upgrade to a Pentium 3 either via a true P3 slot 1 CPU or via a slotket. I'd strongly suggest getting a Duron and a KT133/KT133A mobo combo since they are really "value" oriented with performance that can play side by side with the big boys.

The performance difference between a Duron & an TBird is Duron = TBird - 100Mhz

a Duron 850 is equivelant to a Tbird 750 in performance. TBirds are so low priced now it's idiotic NOT to get a TBird!

biggs & kreno, thanx for the info. 1 question though. Don't i need to worry about my other hardwares (i.e.,memory, video & sound, etc.) if i switch from pentium to AMD?

Well, most likely you'll need get faster PC100 or PC133 SDRAM, unless yours is already PC100/133. and some newer motherboards might not have ISA slot, so if you have ISA card and want to keep them, you'll want to find the right MB for you.

but those are true for BOTH AMD and INTEL motherboards.
Personally I'd go with AMD. better price/performance ratio and a superior processor design..

For a person worried about cost i would definatly reccommend an AMD. Intel is overated anyways, so u will probably get similar maybe even better performance from the Duron rather than the p3. This coming from a guy that has only owned pentium processors his whole life.

I recommend you get a KT7A or Iwill KK266-R with an Athlon 800 with 128MB of Kingmax TinyBGA <--(the poor man's mushkin 🙂)

In other words...get a good BX board, use the processor you have and then upgrade to a PIII when you can afford it.

He's tring to get by on the cheap guys. Going AMD/VIA requires him to build a completely new computer.

He'll need a new case/ps, ram, etc and all AMD approved.:disgust:
