Hey guys i have an asus a8n-e mobo. It says that it supports athlon 64, athlon 64x2 and athlon 64fx. I'm a little confused. right now i have an athlon 3800 x2 processor im wondering what is the fastest cpu i could put in this thing. i was looking at something like an athlon 64 fx 5800 or so. i appreciate any replies thanks.

Overclock it ? You could drop in a AMD Opteron 185 Denmark 2.6GHz, but you could also crank up that x2 3800+ to 2.6ghz. If you're looking for a lot more cpu power, you should be looking at Intel, and buy a e6x00 and OC it to 3.2-3.6ghz. But if you OC that x2 3800+ to 2.6ghz, it will be hard to find anything considerably faster then that for your mobo.

thanks for the advice but my question was what could i throw in there stock. it says it supports athlon fx's but is it even the same socket as my x2?

Why wouldn't it be 😛 The fx-60 is the top-end s939 chip, as far as I'm concerned, 2.6ghz dualcore. It has an unlocked multiplier, I'm guessing it overclocks pretty well. Then theres that opteron 185 at 2.6ghz.

That's it. I doubt you could justify the price of buying them compared to your x2 3800+ though.
