Need help upgrading CPU...

I know the 630 is based on Intel's 90nm chip and the 631 uses a 65nm chip. My question is would there be a significant performance improvement in the 631? Also, will there be a difference in power consumption and temperature levels between the 2 chips?

in terms of stock performance they are the exact same, but you might get better overclocking out of the 631.

The performance at stock speeds will be the same like browntown mentioned. My 920 ran a good bit cooler than my 830, even when it was overclocked, so I would expect the same for the single cores. The 65nm chips do use less power and run a little cooler, and also have higher OC potential. Just be careful not to feed it too much voltage, although I'm still not entirerly sure thats what killed one of the cores on my 920 .

from what i've seen stevy2889 jsut got screwed chip wise, other people seem to be fine with these 65nm chips. Anyways, they still pump put a good amount of heat, so if you want to overclock it considerably then you will probably want more then jsut a stock cooler, but no matter what you are doing the 631 should be better, so get it...just make sure the heatsink has a good fit, i hear that if you dont apply enough thermal paste thenyou can get bad connection, but that might jsut be the 9xx series
