Need help unlocking barton multipliers (2500)

I honestly have no idea what week of production my particular CPU was made during, but since I only bought it (oem, newegg) last week, I'm assuming it was produced after the week 39 cutoff...

Anyway, I've read about multiplier unlocking here and at the OCWbench forums IIRC. I want to unlock the second L5 bridge from the right to convert my CPU to a Athlon XP-mobile and allow me to try CPU-MSR (I have an Abit NF7-S v2.0, and someone reported that it did work with this board) So now for my questions...

Can I use "silver paint" without having to physically knife my CPU?
If so, can someone recommend a silver paint for me?
If the trick doesn't work and I want to remove the silver paint, what's a good method? (I'm *really* hoping isopropyl will do the trick)

If I have to knife my CPU anyway, exactly where do I cut and how much pressure do I use? (I'm not sure what the cut bridges look like so I don't really know what I'm trying to accomplish. Also, I don't understand what cutting "the sides" means....) If anyone knows of an idiot-proof guide to the pencil trick, please LMK.

theres nothing you can do to unlock the new amd cpus past week 39. i just got a locked one in that smokes my unlocked onemy old 2500+ toped out @2400mhz with 1.95 volts the new one does 2480 @1.95 volts. id suggest getting some good pc 3500 ram and a mobo like the based on the nf2 that is known to do high fsb like 220-230. the abit,chaintech and dfi lan party comes to mind

didn't know chaintecs were good for overclocking. any links?

1.95V is very high man! I'd be curious to know how long that CPU will last before it starts giving out errors.

But currently, there's no way to lock the multipliers. Those instructions you linked to are for use on older CPUs with motherboards that didn't automatically unlock the multiplier.

I am pretty sure the mobile XP mod will only work on a VIA or SIS chipset. A good way to check is to see if you can grab a PCR file for WPCREDIT or the NB documentation and see if it supports the FID_Change command.

So basically I have to find a pre-week 39 production 2500 before I should even try connecting the L5 bridges to see if CPU-MSR will work with my NF7-S v2?

Yeah that would help if it wasn't a multiplier locked barton . Also, I would verify whether the mobile XP mod does or does not work on your board/chipset. From what I've read, it sounds like it doesn't, but I have heard a few people claim that it works so maybe a little research may be in order.

As far as your original question goes, depending on whether you need to open or close bridges will determine whether you need to cut a bridge or paint over it. I went and bought a silver conductive paint pen when i did all my bridge modding.

I recall reading on a forum (albeit a single forum) that one user knew a person enabled multiplier changing on my motherboard with a barton. The post didn't mention whether what week of production the CPU was made during though. The guy who is working on CPU-MSR has only heard of it working on a DFI nForce2 board, but I figure it's still worth a shot.

Anyway, if I need to close a bridge, do I just use a silver paint pen and paint on the CPU package or do I have to scratch a layer off the package before applying the silver?

If I can just draw directly on the package with the silver paint pen and I find that it does not work, how would I go about removing the silver?

I'm, not sure if you will need to scratch or not on a barton as I have only painted t-bred bridges, but rubbing alcohol easily takes off the silver paint. It's recommended to use the purest isopropyl alcohol you can find, 99% if possible.

Yeah a 3.3% increase in clock speed is smoking.

It's not even worth mentioning....

As for 1.95v, if you have to crank it up that high to get those yields.....
