Mater Dei is NOT in norcal. It is in Santa Ana which is in Orange County. Private, Catholic.

Poly is short for Long Beach Poly. Public.

As other people have stated the valley is the San Fernando Valley. It's a vast wasteland which is separated from LA by a "mountain range which runs east-west north of LA.

No other part of the country is as fragmented with individualized sub-nations as California.

Mention any of the following cities to someone living more than 10 miles away from it and they'll look at you cockeyed:
Santa Fe Springs, Indio, Baldwin Hills, Rancho Palos Verdes, Lomita, Wilmington, Diamond Bar, Hawaiian Gardens, Hollywood Riviera, et al..

That's why it's easier to say "The Valley" because everyone knows basically where "The Valley" is. Or "Inland Empire" (== BFE). Or "The South Bay." There's just too many small cities and communities to keep track of if you don't travel much.

The Freeway Numbering phenomenon still escapes me. I'm born and raised in LA so it's only natural that we take The 405 to The 110 to The 91. When I travel out of state and have people tell me to take I-25 and I ask if it hits THE I-80 they stare at me like I just sprouted horns and a fourth nipple out of my forehead.

The "the" freeway thing isn't used in nor cal, either. We usually just use the number. Take 17 north to 880 to 680 to 80 east.

So what's up with the questions? are u looking into goign to school out here?

yup, from sj to la, its 6 hours. and i think thats with a little law breakin:)

You haven't been to the right areas. Saying that is like me saying everyone from Texas is a redneck gun toting, beer guzzling hick that owns a horse trailer and an outhouse, and drives a raised pickup with a gun rack while spewing chaw out their window.

Beach cities are incredibly nice and have gobs of charm. So does Venice and Santa Monica if you go to the right parts. Pasadena, Palos Verdes Peninsula, and Long Beach are also very nice. Granted, none of it is as "cute" or "quaint" as some NorCal communities but it's far from a "hole."

Do you live in a barn? I hear Texans live in barns.

You can blame the LA tap water for it.

Nah 6 hours is with normal driving and cross-your-fingers-no-accidents.

Took about 8 hours from LA-Napa with minimal speeding and fighting morning LA traffic.
About 8 hours back; would have been 7 or less but some jackhole got into an accident on the north part of I-5 and we were stuck for an hour.

Pretty much the same with Cupertino, Milpitas, Los Gatos I would imagine.

Ever been anywhere other than Hollywood, Beverly Hills, 3rd Street, or Venice Beach?

I do wish we had more lenient gun laws, though. At least they haven't outlawed pistol and rifle ranges, yet. Still one of my favorite ways to chill out and have fun.

LA -> Snow Summit / other mediocre resort = 2 hours

LA -> Bear Mountain = 2-3 hours

LA -> Mammoth Mountain = 5-6 hours

LA -> Tahoe = 7-8 hours

It's only 4hrs to Mammoth. That's pretty good, especially on weekdays.

It's also only an hour and a half flight to Sac and and hour and a half drive to Tahoe from there. It's more expensive, but going to Tahoe is an expensive vacation anyway.

So where in LA have you been to that you deem yourself correct in describing it as a "hole?"
