Hi,

My laptop from work has had the built in wireless turned off by the IT department. They say it is a security risk even though they don't seem to worry about people with wireless adapters. Anyway, I would still like to use the laptop to surf the net when I'm at home. Does anyone have any ideas on how to turn it back on. If you enable the card it just says that no wireless networks are found.

Thanks

Depends what kind of laptop it is I think. I have a clevo, and it is FN + F11. However, I would not do it at work if IT tells you not too, they are not just saying such things for fun...its a tough job keeping the workplace secure.

*PS. This would go over better in the SFF, Notebooks forum

I finally got the wireless working on the dell laptop. I downloaded the lastest intel drivers and utilities. Still didn't work with the new driver but with the intel wireless utility I was able to get it working again. XP's utility said there were no wireless networks available but the intel one found 5 available.

By the way, the wireless is just for home use. We are still fully wired at work. With all the Sarbanes Oxley stuff going on it seems like we need a password to access our password.

Uhm, but do you have "sensitive" data contained on that laptop, that you use for work? Medical, financial, or other important data, records, passwords, etc.?
If so, I would strongly think twice about using it in an (unsecured, I assume) wireless network at home. Who knows who might be listening, or indeed, rummaging through your files.
