I don't think the Hammer line is planned for desktop usage in 2002...
Look at AMD's roadmap, they have ClawHammer scheduled for desktop usage at the end of 2002/possibly beginning 2003.
...its gonna be rolled out for the server and high-end workstation crowd.
That's the SlegeHammer processor, scheduled for a Q1 2003 release.
Also, remember that it will be using a completely new 64-bit architecture, so its desktop acceptance may take a bit longer...
Actually, if anything, ClawHammer will look even more attractive just by having 64-bit capabilities (whether 64-bit on ClawHammer will operate at a high performance level is unknown as of right now).
...not to mention its price tag may be prohibitive for mass consumption.
Not necessarily actually. When ClawHammer debuts, it's die size will be about 20% smaller than current Athlon XPs (104mm² to 129mm²). Also, if the Northbridge is in fact integrated onto the ClawHammer's die, yes, the actual AMD "processor" (funny how it's really more than just a processor, but a processor-chipset really) will be more expensive. However, you must factor in motherboard costs. And motherboards will certainly be significantly less money if they didn't need to incorporate a Northbridge into the design.
Again, we're going off of only a basic understanding of Hammer. We'll know soon enough what AMD is planning.
