Need Help Sharing DSL Connection

I'm having trouble sharing my dsl connection b/w my two computers. They are networked and I have a separate ip for each. Only one computer is succesfully using the connection at the moment. Also in the network neighborhood both computers only show themselves. Although, before I had gotten DSL the network was running fine. Any suggestions at all would be appreciated.

In order for the second computer to share the connection with the first, you need to have the necessary connection sharing software installed, such as the ICS built in to Windows 98SE, or Sygate http://www.sygate.com. In the alternative, a hardware solution, such as a DSL router, would serve the same function.

Tell us more about your setup. Internal or external modem? What OS on the machines? How are they networked?

If your network neighborhood only show 1 PC without showing your other one, then I think your network is not working properly. Get your network working perfectly before doing ICS, cuz ICS relies on the network working.

Make sure you have an unique 192.168.0.x for each computer, and the same 255.255.255.0 submask. Assign an unique name to each computer, but the same workgroup. Also make sure "File and Printer Sharing" is installed.

As for ICS, I personally use Sygate also. It's real easy to setup, just install Sygate using Server mode on the PC with the DSL, then at your other PC set the gateway to the IP of the first PC (eg. 192.168.0.1), and set DNS to the DNS of your DSL provider. And that's it! But make sure your network is working properly before doing this, cuz sygate assumes your network is working, it won't work unless ur network works.

i was under the impression that i wouldnt need to install any additional software since purchased to IPs from my dsl provider. The dsl is modem is plugged into the uplink port of my hub.

Oh, sorry, I didn't realize you have 2 IPs. In that case, yeah, you don't need ICS software, since you are not sharing an IP.

I believe all you need to do is configure each machine using the exact same settings except for the IP.

As far as plugging the DSL modem to the uplink, I'm not really sure about that... I thought the uplink is use solely to link multiple hubs together to form a larger network. I am not sure about this though, can someone correct me?

my understanding is the uplink port can be used to share the dsl connection. One computer of the two is using the connection perfectly, so i assume the uplink port is not the problem. I have each machine configured exactly the same except for the ip's yet its not working.

I was going to ask a similar question about sharing a DSL connection.

I am going to get DSL and I want to share my $40 DSL connection with my Laptop and my Desktop.

In order to do this, do I need to run a computer as a server?[ICS], or can I use a DSL router so the DSL connection can be used independently in each machine ?

Duckers: Actually for using the router or ICS, you are sharing that 1 IP address. The difference is, if you use ICS, 1 PC has to act as the server and redirect the information from the DSL modem to the client. With a router, the router does that job for you, so there is no need for a server and 1 PC does not have to be on all the time. Both the router and ICS uses NAT, so the concept behind them is the same. Only a router is much easier to setup, no need to mess around with the software settings and free up 1 computer. And the router has built-in firewall for added security.

Hope that clear things up! Both options will be good for you, just have to decide if the added security and convinence is worth the cost of the router.

PHan52: why don't u cancel that additional IP and use ICS instead? Saves quite a bit of money in the long run, and the DSL provider can't find out and won't care even if they do.

One benefit of using two IP's is that some online games have a problem if each PC doesn't have it's own IP.

If you use ICS to share out a connection, the second computer sort of spoofs or piggybacks off of the IP of the computer that the DSL line is hooked up to.

Not all games have problems w/ ICS, but some do.

I use LANBRIDGE to facilitate the sharing of my DSL connection over my hone LAN. It works perfectly. All computers have the "client" spoftware installed. THe computer with the DSL Adapter Card had the "SERVER" software installed.
