Need help setting up virtual memory in win98

is there a specific number I should use for min and max !? or can I use any number ?? what is the max vm I can assign ... if no max what do you guys recommend !?

why not leave it as it is? Meaning: Let Windows manage its own virtual memory. You are using 98, so it is not a huge deal.

The typical measure for Virtual Memory is 3/2 RAM --> 3 * RAM. For you that would be a min. of 384MB and max. of 768MB.

Are you doing something special that you think requires configuring manually is the right choice? Just wondering. 😉

ohh no no .. the system listed below is still not put together .. it's my next week end project. But for now I have a 200MMX with 64 MB of EDO RAM and I always run out of memory...
so I run Sandra it sayed to set up the virtual memory to a fixed file size...
What unit does Min and Max filed uses ? MB or KB ?

It uses MB. Right click my computer>properties>performance>virtual memory...let me specify my own virtual memory settings. I suggest 128MB or 256MB with your setup. Try to keep as few useless programs running the background as you can.

What I want to know is what does he expect to gain from this? He has a 45GB hard drive and probably 256MB of it will be taken by default for Virtual Memory. Why not just leave it be? 98 is crap for software and I have seen people destroy their systems or run into terrible problems when manipulating Virtual Memory rather than leaving it alone.

Windows 9x has a terrible problem with the virtual memory ballooning to an extreemly large size if you let windows manage it. The problem with a large virtual memory is that you are losing the performance that the swap file is meant for. The more data that is in the swap file the longer it takes to retrieve it. A basic rule of thumb is 2.5 x installed RAM. You should set the minimum and the maximum to the same amount so windows cannot resize it. Also it is a good idea to defrag before you change your virtual memory settings.

I use 320mb for my maximum &amp; minimum on my Win98 OS1(I`ve 256mb)I also use Cacheman 4.1 which IMHO is very good,I`ve yet to have any problems,btw I`m also a gamer &amp; all my games run fine.Last thing I`ve been running this kind of setup for years so it`s gone through a long testing period.
