I need help setting up a DGL-4300 > Wireless 108G Gaming Router so that i get no lag playing games when another person is on the network websurfing/downloading stuff. I bought this router thinking it does just that but when my brother runs limewire or just surfs the net i get lag in my games. Im guessing im doing something wrong here.

You are probably saturating the limits of your connection, and this should be in the networking forum

8mb down and 512 up. Is there a way to limit the bandwith that he can get. Would that be the solution or is it just the fact that its interuption from him trying to access something on the net thats causing the lag. Im still confused because this router claims to be able to prevent this stuff from happening

Well, it you actually get thos speeds, there's no way you've maxed out your connection. I have a second PC connected to my 3MB DSL connection, and surfing or even watching straming video on one PC has no effect on on-line gaming. So I'd say yes, something is wrong. What it is exactly, I do not know. Have you checked your connection speed to see what you are actually getting?

Also, you'll probably get better help in the networking forum. PM a mod and ask them to move this thread.

You probably need to set the router up to prioritize the game packets over all other traffic, doesn't sound like the router is set up to do that automatically. The product manual should have all that info?

I have that exact router and the quote above sounds exactly like your problem... when he says saturates it may be saturating your connections available. Limewire can take up to 500 connections while your router can technically only handle 255 if I remember correctly.

yup, that's what I was talking about. Go into the settings for your BT/P2P application and limit the connection(especially upload)

Well, it could be that your uplink is saturated, but if things are set up correctly, then you should be able to prioritize the gaming traffic. Your gaming computer is an ethernet connection and not wireless, right?

Limiting the upload speed of your PTP program will likely help, but you need some type of QoS to prioritize traffic to your gaming computer. It looks like your router is supposed to have that. Some QoS strategies are automatic, and some need to be set up. Some routers have an option to set high priority to one of the ethernet ports on the switch. So if your computer is on port 3, set that to high and the others to low. If you're having problems then obviously the automatic settings aren't working. See if there's a QoS or "gaming" tab where you can specify rules for prioritizing traffic.

Another option is to get something like the Hawking HBB1. I actually have had a lot of luck with that product. It has some type of QoS algorithm in it that prioritizes gaming and VOIP traffic. It really helped me out a lot, mainly on my VOIP but it also improved latency in gaming. You should be able to pick one up for around $30-$40 if you look around.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Guys, what he's talking about and what this router is mainly geared toward is QoS. And the marketing term for this option for this device is called "GameFuel." This will give priority to "game traffic". It doesn't eliminate all lag, but it certainly helps. To enable this option, go to the Advanced tab and on the left choose GameFuel. On this screen you should now have the option to check GameFuel. Check it and save the settings. Give it a shot with the default settings. If you are still getting more lag than you'd like, tweak the settings on this screen.

cpmer, you actually want to do the tweaking on your router (the GameFuel section more specifically).

Is there anyway in the router software to setup so the upstairs computer only get so much bandwith? I want to limit both the upload and download

With your current router... no way possible. But with any corporate router or switch then yes

But if you have GameFuel enabled and you have doubled checked to make sure that your gaming profile is listed in the default list of priority profiles and your not saturating your network connections then most likely your internet is sucking badly!

I mean I know for a fact that if a P2P program like limewire consumes all the network connections then your router will ethier reset or run really really slow!
