I need help setting up a network between my old computer (WIN98) and my new
one (WINxp)through a router. I've got the internet on both but I can't seem
to get the network between them to work. When the W98 (Compaq) computer was
new I had set up a network with my previous computer using a crossover
cable. Now I have a Linksys router inbetween them instead.

On the Wxp I can see the w98 machine listed along with the Wxp (called DELL)
in their workgroup. But when I try to open the W98 (called Compaq) I get
"Compaq is not accessible. You might not have permission...Contact the
administrator of this server..."

On the W98 machine, I see only the W98 (called Compaq).

I have file and print sharing enabled on both.

ANy suggestions?

THanks JackMDS, I found some of those links by looking at your responses to other requests for help on this forum.

Here is what I did: After 3.5 hours of asking for help, here and elsewhere and trying to read
everything I could about networks between WIN XP and WIN 98 machines, I
tried again to follow the WIN XP instructions. The floppy that was created
on the WIN XP to use on my Win 98 machine didn't work, but I went back and
tried the other option which was to use the WIN XP CD in the WIN 98 machine.
I got several error messages, a fatal exception and a request for a disk I
didn't have. So I was extremely surprised when it worked and my network
looked great.

Here is my next question:
Is it really safe to just use the NAT on the router and drop the Norton Firewall on the WIN98 and XP's built in firewall?
One of the things I tried last night was to finallly (after 3 years of postponing) downloaded the WIN 98 service pack. Now I see that I am getting a low threat warning on the WIN 98 about a DLL trying to access ithe internet from my side.

THanks for your help.

You'll want a software firewall on both machines (well, I would, at any rate). If your network is now working properly, a software firewall shouldn't pose a problem, though you may have to configure it to allow connections between your computers and the router (that's how Zonealarm works).
