hey all,
the technician just came today and installed my 384/384 SDSL...so far, so good.

I've got a 10Mbit netcard installed, no sweat.....but I can't get on the net. IE reports that no internet connection is available :(

I got a Cisco 677 ADSL Router (yes, it works with SDSL too), but I'm unsure of how I set it up. I've went to IE's preferences, told it not to dial the modem (ISDN) connection...checked the box disallowing internet programs to use the dial-up thing.

Now, I've went to Network settings, Disabled DNS and WINS, told it to automatically retrieve an IP address, but no luck :(

could anyone please try to give me all the settings I need to make it work? I can't for the ********* of my life find my router's IP address, which I've been told by a friend to set as 'Gateway'.....anyone know how I can find this?

the manual has a billion cryptic commands and all sorts of crap you can run, but it makes little sense to me....please help, thanks a lot :)

First of all you need to install the software for the modem. You should be able to set up the modem from there with a little reference to the manual. You will also need to set up the network settings in Windows with the gateway address and DNS.

Can you ping the router? That seems to me to be the first step - make sure the network is ok first. Then try and figure out why it's not working with the outside world. Are you sure that it's not the ISP's problem? I'm surprised that they aren't helping more with the problem.

BTW, if you don't mind me asking - how much are you paying for 384/384? And from whom?

Good luck

After reading Prodigy^s unsuccessful attempts at setting up the router through Internet Explorer, I figured he didn't have the Cisco Commander software installed.

Good luck getting it set up. Let us know how it goes.

Contact your ISP's tech support and verify they have all the paper work done at their end. I had this problem and found I did not exist far enough into the system to validate password. Depending on the ISP's software, if any, there may not be a message informing of failed password. Also there may be specific protocols you need to add e.g. NDISWAN -> Microsoft Virtual Private Networking Adapter, good luck reaching a tech who can do more than lead you through reinstalling the software.

thanks for the quick replies :)

MasterMind: true, I don't have any router software installed. I tried putting the cd in, but it gave me a lot of crap about netscape and acrobat reader and such, having to be installed, so i didn't bother...will look closer now

pm: yup i can ping the router, gives me 1ms or <10ms...it's from a Danish ISP called Cybercity, I paid nothing to get it set up and the hardware is borrowed from the ISP (just bought a $20 netcard)....and it's around $60 per month :)

oh, and i'm certain the ISP would be able to help, but their support lines aren't open, and I had to go out shortly after i got it installed :)

/me will now browse that cd better and get back to you ;)

Do you have a Cisco installation CD?

You will also need the network info your ISP should have provided. You will need a gateway IP address as well as 2 DNS IP's + the domain name address (ie Cybercity.com). All this info goes in the network settings in Windows.

The Cisco software installation should be as simple as double-clicking the .exe file.

If you dont have the network info or Cisco CD you need to call your ISP.

I might be overlooking something here, but why do you have your machine getting an IP and not assigning it one of the static IPs you were issued by your ISP? This could be your problem - run WinIpCfg from START > RUN and see if you have an ip assigned to that NIC card.

I *believe* your gateway should be set to your router IP. If you set it to "Automatically get an IP address" it will attempt to use DHCP and grab DNS, gateway, and domain for you. However, network needs to be set up do DO dhcp. Am I out of my mind here or am I making sense?

hehe.....ok it's not 'true' static IP, it's just that I get an IP from the server, which rarely changes.....and my hostname remains the same :) that's how it works
