On a W2K machine with multiple network cards, do I need to put a Gateway address
on each NIC? Is there a document with what is the process for this?

ok, first thing. you might want to think about getting a router to use rather than going this method. its fast, easier and will run even when the 1 computer is down.

ok the wan connect nic needs the gateway.

the lan connect gate way, either uses the loopback or the otehr nic's.

Now when do you need to enter a gateway at each NIC and when not? I have looked around and sometimes see people putting it in and sometimes they don't...is there a convention to follow?

Well first of all computer use the gateway ip address only when it is trying to reach another device on a different subnet/network. When your accessing the internet a gateway is used, but when you're just accessing the computer on the same network the gateway is ignored.

I guess you can follow that guideline 🙂
