need help setting up a network

I have two PC's that I need to hook up, and I'm using CABLE internet. I have the cat5e patch cable coming from the modem to the Uplink slot in my LinKsys hub. I then have my primary PC hooked up to slot #1 and my secound PC hooked up to slot #2 the lights blink and my hardware is found in both PC's (using a netgear adapter in boht PC's) I eneabled ICS and i was able to get PC #1 online, but PC #2 just won't connect.... can anyone help me out?

you should be using a router, not a hub. Most ISP's won't let you acquire two DNS IP addresses per modem, and both PC's need an IP address of their own to be on the network and function properly.

For example, my cable modem's IP address is XX.XXX.XXX.68

The cable modem is plugged into my router, which takes the above IP address and acts as a local DNS server. It issues addresses to each PC on the network in the form of 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, and so on. This is called Network Address Translation, or NAT. It also functions as a firewall against incoming intrusion, which you hub most certainly will not.

The problem is that the ICS computer needs to have two network cards to work. ICS is not able to run over the same interface that the main Internet connection uses. ICS makes your PC act like a router, which requires that it have two interfaces. One is used for the "internal network", the LAN, and the other is for the "outside network".

Your PC1 needs to have two network cards. One of them connected to the cable modem, and the other one assigned to work with ICS. PC2 can then either plug directly to that second interface with a crossover cable or they both can plug into the hub with regular cables.

Getting a cable/DSL router is definitely an easier and more secure way to set things up of course. But if you already have a PC with two network interfaces, or are comfortable installing either a PCI network card or a USB adapter, then that's cheaper.

Wow, I just buy a HUB after somone says thats my problem and now your saying I need an EXTRA adapter and more cables... Will somone just make up their mind, I KNOW FOR A FACT! that I don't need ALL of this to setup a network between TWO pc's...

I have a HUB, I have the uplink connected by the modem, I have my PC's connected to the HUB, I have them both configured to the HUB with hardware properly installed.. I have the CAT5e's ran perfectly and drivers installed fine.. PC #1 has connectivity and I can go online, #2 gets packets sent but not received and I have the configured... I just don't see what's up here?

im not too impressed with the ANANDTECH users right now... I came here in the first place to gather equipment info and I bought the exact equipment.. i now hear i need a router too? why even make a HUB if I can't use it, I DONT GIVE AFUCK ABOUT SECURITY, NO ONE IS GOING TO HACK ME. I just want the connection to work on both PC#1 and PC#2.. help me do that and im happy, but i dont need all this BS when I know it'll work.

One of the sugestions in your original thread was for a router.

So order a $25(AR) router and get on with it.

It is about not using a ballpeen hammer to driver fence posts. The right tool for the right job.


With that said. If by hooked up you mean that you want them to be able to share files you still need a router to seperate the Internet and your two computers.

well then take your attitude to a place where they will help someone of your maturity level....say elementary school....
