I'm building my first computer and need some help choosing a motherboard. I've already pretty much decided on an Athlon 1800, 400w silencer power supply from pc power and cooling, 512 mb crucial 2100. Now -- which motherboard should I select and, if it doesn't have integrated video, which video card?

Thanks, I appreciate any thoughts you wish to share.

If your looking for a thrifty solution go with Shuttle AK31A@80$ and Gainward/Cardexpet GeForce 2 Ti / 500 XP, 4ns 64MB DDR , VIVO, Golden Sample Plus@139$. If money isn't such a factor the MSI K7T266 PRO2-RU 266MHz FSB ATX DDR IDE RAID USB 2.0 MOTHERBOARD - RETAIL@135$ is a full feature board and theCARDEXPERT GEFORCE3 POWERPAK GOLDEN SAMPLE 64MB W/TV-OUT, VIVO, DVI. Enhance Mode/Over-Clock. is a good value@275$

First, the only motherboards with video on board that will work with your cpu are the nForce and none are available right now. Second, you don't want video onboard with that beast. Now, you need to ask yourself some questions to find the best board for you, Do you want to overclock? Do you want on board sound/RAID/ethernet/USB 2.0? Once you know what you want on your board, it's easy to find the one that will suit your needs. As far as graphic are concerned, get a GeForce. Here's what I would suggest, starting with the cheapest:

- GeForce MX400
- GeForce 2 GTS 32MB
- GeForce 2 Ti
- GeForce 3 Ti 200
- GeForce 3
- GeForce 3 Ti 500

These start from around 75$ and go all the way up to 400$, it depends on what you're willing to pay and if you're going to use this for gaming.

Good luck!
