need help selecting memory

A few questions:

1. why the range of voltages?
Higher cost (and I assume performance) modules seem to have higher voltages specified. At stock speeds, does this mean they run hotter? Consume more energy?

2. At stock speeds, do you need a heat spreader?
(especially if it's a 1.8 or 1.9V module)

3. Since I'm running at stock speeds, is it wise to shop by CAS rating?

4. For an Athlon 64 3600 x2 CPU, what is the stock memory speed?

Any other advice is appreciated
My goal is to get a cool running, decent performing, quiet PC with a little forward compatibility
