What is the best value for money CD writer? I wanted to know what the variuous speeds mean (8X, 4X, 2X) and what the numbers and speeds mean in terms of assessing value. I would like to get an internal drive.

Look forward to your replies!! - Thank you, Tom.

I personally recommend you get the Plextor 12/10/32 drive. Its available as both IDE and SCSI, SCSI is better but also more expensive. Plextor drives are known for being the best! What ever u do DONT buy a Yamaha!

Plextors are probably the best... but I've also heard good things about the new 16x Yamaha burner. They usually list the speeds in this order: Write speed, ReWrite speed, and Read speed. So the Plextor you should look at is the 12x, 10x, 32x Plexwriter. Or the Yamaha Lightspeed which is 16x, 10x, 32x. Both of these drives have Burn-Proof/Waste-Proof technology, which basically eliminates buffer underruns. It allows the burner to turn off the laser and pick off from where it left off if the source can't output the data fast enough. The Plexwriter includes a 4mb buffer, and the Yamaha includes an 8mb buffer. I don't they they really matter, since the Burn/Waste-Proof technology will minimize coasters already. Also remember that media that burn at higher speeds tend to cost a little more. For CDR media, I recommend Outpost.com which sells a 50 pack of 80min. Kingston Hypermedia cdr's for around 15 bucks. The 8x ones are a little cheaper and the 12x ones a little mor expensive. Free overnight shipping... can't beat that! Good luck on your purchase and let us know which one you picked...

When it comes to removable media I never stray beyond SCSI. As far as Burner Brands, I suggest Yamaha or Plextor. The SCSI burners are much better, but you pay a small premium. Check around, you can probably get an 8x4x32 SCSI Yamaha burner for around $200.

Plextors are the flat out best, but you pay quite a bit for them.
Yamahas are also very good and not nearly as expensvie.

If you do alot of burning go plextor, if you do more casual burning get the Yamaha.

The guy who posted the original message would probably have to get an SCSI card in order to use the any of the SCSI cd-burners recommended, and a good SCSI card isn't cheap.

Just to let you know I got an LG 8083B 4X4X24, speed is not my priority, I just want to use it to copy minor data nothing too important and I won't be doing 1000's of cdr's so. and with the $30Cdn extra 3 years, instant replace with a new model and no hassle warranty it was still $30 less than the plextor 8X4X32.

CompUSA is selling a Cendyne 8x4x32x internal IDE for $130 - $30 rebate. Cendyne sells rebadged models; while this looks like a Ricoh, many have said it's a Plextor with 2MB cache instead of 4MB. It seems like a great deal. Or you could go for a Plextor 8x4x32x for $155 - whatever coupons you can find at Buy.com.

Actually the Yamaha has the larger 8mb buffer because it does not have any burn-proof technology. The Plextor is nice, and with burn-proof, you won't get any coasters. Also, have you considered the TDK VeloCD 12x10x32? This is actually a rebaged and upgraded Plextor. In it's review at cdrinfo.com, it actually beat the Plextor in some tests due to it having a newer internal mechanism. Buy.com has them included with 50 free TDK CDR's and it comes with Nero 5. I just picked one up for $220. Good luck..
