Need HELP reviving a dead SETI cruncher.

A dual intel cpu system is dead. I only have a single AMD Thunderbird/motherboard available. Is there a way to install this motherboard to this dead dual cpu system and save the current Windows 2000 installation? I'm trying to avoid reinstalling all those applications.

Windows should just install the new drivers for the new chipset, etc, in practice this doesn't always work too well, but you might as well give it a try 🙂

Reinstall was the faster, better and in the end was the approach that worked for me.
And I was going from a BX to an i815 chipset - both intel, I imagine going from intel to AMD will be even more so.
Save some time and some stress, just reinstall. Unless someone else comes up with some magic bullet here (I wish it were so).

I agree totally. I tried going from an 815e to a VIA chipset and never got past the start up screen. Always ended up at the BSOD with some funky errors... Clean install and all is wonderful... 🙂

I agree it is a pain, are you planning on going back to the dually system?? If so do you have a spare hdd you could use to install the AMD/Tbird with temporarily? Even a small older hdd would work for a short while. That way you'd still have the dually install ready and waiting when you got the m/b back.

Echoing what Rob said, do you have a spare HD?

If so, I would Ghost an image of your Dually configured OS to that spare HD and put it off to the side. Actually, with the newer versions of Ghost, you can burn directly to a CD-R. Either way, this will save you alot of time when you finally get the dually working again.

Then, just do a fresh install to the AMD system and you're back in business.

Make sure you go into device manager and delete all of your devices before you turn it off to install the new board.
I'm now 1 for 2

Unfortunately, the current dual Celeron system is dead. Will not boot at all (EPOX dual slot 1). So I can't delete any devices. I was hoping that there's a way to attached a single AMD 1.4GHz on an MSI K7T266 with raid without having to reinstall Windows 2000.

too many changes: you are asking it to change from a multiprocessor kernel to a single processor kernel at the same time you want it to switch chipsets, hdd controllers, all boot device drivers etc..

I would bet heavily against success.
