Need Help Quick

I'm trying to connect to a buddy for some serious gaming via tcp/ip. I keep getting this error: transmit failed, error code 10050. Same error whether I try and connect through the game or try to ping him. Can someone help me out with this. I did some searching and found this:

10050 WSAENETDOWN
This error may be reported at any time if the Windows Sockets implementation detects an underlying failure. The Windows Sockets implementation has detected that the network subsystem has failed.

What can I do to straighten this out? Please Help.

I'm running Win98SE on the machine I'm trying to connect with. My home network consists of 5 machines running through a Linksys Cable/DSL Router. I can't ping or connect from any of the machines. Doesn't seem to matter if the comp is behind the router or in the DMZ...makes no diff.

EDIT: Mysteriously I can now ping and connect from two of the machines but not the others. Any ideas?

EDIT#2: Now I seem to be able to ping/connect from this machine also. Seems pretty random. Is this likely a problem on Roadrunner's end and not mine? My settings all seem right.
