Long story short, I have a new mother board and an older PSU. The mobo has a 2x4 12v molex connecter for the CPU, while my PSU only has a 2x2. It does fit but I'm scared to turn it on for fear of frying something. Is this something I need to worry about, or do I need to go get an adapter?

That is not a molex, a molex is what is on your Hard Drive/DVD/CD Drives. It is called the EPS12V connector and it powers your CPU. Not that the name changes anything.

You should power all 8pins on the board for best results, however the system should run with just the 4 (2x2).

Your 2x2 connector should only fit 1 place on the 8pin on the motherboard, so no chance of messing it up.

ok, so for now, i should be okay running with just the one connecter. WOuld it be a good idea to buy an adapter to power the rest?

First off....

DON'T PANIC!!!!!

Unless your motherboard is a multi-proc board, you're not going to hurt anything by using the 4-pin in the 8-pin socket.

I do suggest eventually migrating to a PSU with an 8-pin eventually. And don't just do an adapter. Get a PSU with an 8-pin.

alright... everything seems to be fine for now. Temps and everything are well within the range they should be. I definately will upgrade later, but as of right now, I really don't have much strain on my psu.
