Need help please!!

Ok bacicly i have a sata hdd with two partitions yesturday i decided to install windows on the second partition, worked and everything but it wouldent give me an option to dual boot, i.e boot xp. then vista wouldent boot so i tryed to just install xp on the second partition but now i get some error about hardware or something. I think the partiton that my xp is on isent marked as active or something. I have a lunix live cd (knoppix) dont know if i can do anything to fix this with it i can acsess all the files and such. Dont have much experence with linux/knoppix or whatever its called.


I depstratly need on it. so if some one could help me i would greatly apresheate it.

Oh yeah i tryed xp recovory console to use fixboot and it shows two instlations one has a pass that i cant figure out and the other one will wright a new boot sector or whatever but same thing at start up

OK got the admin pass reset with a bootable cd so now im going to try fixboot on the instlation with the password again as i think its my good xp instlation.

Was reading another thread and fount the error ive been geting

'Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware. Please check the windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference for additional information.'

Ok this is what im at right now, i have two instlations of windows and wont dual boot, ie i can choose whitch one i want.

Ok i used the recovory console and used bootcfg /repair to try and add the xp instation i want to boot or whatever got restarted and got the blue screen of deth with some kinda error and such restarted and it just booted the new instlation..

Plz help!

Ok this is where im at right now, i it will dual boot now but when i try to boot the xp instlation i want to get a error saying that hal.dll is missing or currupt. and to try and reinstall it. how would i go about doing this? I do have one xp instlation that will boot so i can acsess the hdd and windows and such just fine.

Just tryed the recovory console to repair it as that seams like what every thing that comes up on google says but it dose the same thing..

Dig through this thread. Is Vista booting OK??. THat is what you have right. Vista on one partiation / XP on another same drive?

Oh sorry no vista is no loger installed, xp is now installed ware vista was and its the one that will boot.

Ok i looked throw that page, helped somewhat i have replaced every hal.dll i can from a cp cd and from a working cp instlation. But just keeps saying its missing or currupt.

On the partition with the non working xp theres some hal.dll's that i couldent replace, wouldent let me, there was like two hal's that where in like driver cash folders or something, could those ones i couldent replace be the cause?

also expand x:\i386\hal.dl_ y:\windows\system32\hal.dll (putting the correct drive letters of course) dosent work just get an error saying that the system cant find the file or directory specifyed.
