Hope you guys can help...

I built my son's new pc, loaded windows on the C: drive which is a Corsair 90GB SSD. Windows is running fine and everything working great from the C: drive.

Now I want to install the Hitachi HDD. I installed all the drivers and the like from the Asrock cd. When I go in and change the storage config to AHCI, window freaks out and freezes on the logo screen and tries to repair the install. If I change it back to IDE mode, it works fine.

I went ahead and hooked the HDD up and it shows up in Device Manager but not when I hit "windows key + E" to show all my drives...

What am I missing?

Do I need to format the hitachi?

HELP!

Thanks!

Well I did some research on my own ( I KNOW, DO THAT FIRST)...

I went into my computer, right clicked, and manage. I then used Simple Set up, it formatted the HDD to NTFS, and now it shows up when I hit Windows Key + E. I created a file on it just to see if it would work and it did.

I haven't changed to AHCI yet, do I need to?

You can't just change from IDE mode to AHCI mode once you've already installed Windows. You were supposed to do that before installing the OS.

The simplest choice is to just reinstall Windows, but remember to change to AHCI mode before reinstalling.

However, you can change it after you installed Windows, but it requires that you make some changes to the registry.

Personally, I prefer to just reinstall - less chance of anything going wrong. You don't have to change it though. I don't believe there's much difference when it comes to HDDs, although there's supposed to be some performance penalty for some SSDs.

Yep, you change to AHCI then install the OS, looks like you forgot to do that FIRST and thought you could change it after. Oops, not a huge deal, maybe an hour or two to get everything back. Best change it now and not have to re-install a whole lot of things.

WOW...this seems like a MUCH easier fix than re-installing windows...

Used this fix, running great in AHCI now!

Thanks again to Mnewsham and MFenn for all the great advice on this rig!

 to blackmage and mnewsham for the ACHI fix. I read the OP and I was thinking, "oh, both of those problems are easy," but the other guys beat me to it. *shakes fist*
