TIA

Assign static IPs on the same subnet, share the files on one machine, access the share from the other.

enable file and printer sharing on both pc's. install netbios if necessary. Share out the folders that you need to copy over.

Assuming your on xp, control panel> network connections> right click> open>internet protocol (TCP/IP)>properties>alternate configuration

Here is what I've had to do (assuming at least one is Win XP):
1) Go to the Win XP computer (randomly pick one if both are Win XP). In the control panel / network connections menu, select "new connection wizzard".
2) Follow the wizzard steps, one at a time.
3) If both are Win XP, do the same to the next computer, if not have the first computer create a disk to do the work for you (on the last screen of the "new connection wizzard").
4) Shut off both computers.
5) Turn one on, then the other (if the sharing doesn't work you need to turn them off, and then boot them up one at a time in the opposite order). Sorry but things don't work smoothly yet and this is an annoying step I haven't been able to get around.
6) Click on "My Network"
7) Share away.

Step #5 is the critical step that gives most people problems.

IF the laptops are both anything newer than Win98, and you plug them in with a crossover cable - all you should have to do is reboot both of them, and they should both auto-assign an IP address that looks like 169.xxx.xxx.xxx - random #s, but both in the same subnet so they'll work fine.

Obviously everyone's advice about using a 192.168.x.x network will also work, but FYI microsoft already thought of just this case and the OS has a built in provision for it. You will need to enable file sharing or whatever, but you should be able to see one computer from the other via the network.
